The world is full of art lovers, and many of those choose to make the journey to Italy as one of their bucket list destinations for exactly that reason. It may not be the only one, but it certainly ranks up as one of the top reasons to visit this country. The Galleria dell Accademia draws thousands of such art lovers to its doorstep and for very good reason.

Originally constructed with the intention of giving only the works of Michelangelo a permanent home, it now houses the great works of not only Michelangelo, but many other great artists as well. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to explore all this magnificent place to ensure you get the chance to appreciate everything it has to offer. Once used as a hospital, in the 17th century it was converted (along with the convent of San Niccolot di Dafaggio) into a space to house the gallery of fine artwork so that the students of art of the day could have a chance to study the work of the masters. When you enter the Hall of the Colossus, you’ll not only see the sculptures of Michelangelo, but also great works by Botticelli and Giambologna as well. Standing vigil over the sculptures, breathtaking panel paintings have their homes on the walls here. Pieces by such masters as, Pontormo, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Bronzino fill the walls, a visual feast. Even more popular than the Hall of the Colossus is the Hall of the Prisoners, containing the unfinished “Slaves” by Michelangelo, and of course home to one of his most well known works, David.

The lower or downstairs gallery is home to pieces dedicated to Florentine Gothic painting. Works by Bernardo Daddi and Orcagna comprise a collection that is to this day considered as one of the worlds foremost invaluable collections.

The Galleria is not just for the lovers of art and sculpture. Music lovers and those who love the instruments that create the foundations of music will find much here to interest them as well. Within the walls of the Galleria is a collection of instruments that belong to the Luigi Cherubinin Conservatory. Here one can discover who originally came up with the idea for the piano, and explore the rich history of many of the other instruments that have been popular down through the ages and remain popular to this day.
