Winter
season got you down? Don’t have anywhere to go? Maybe it’s time for you to
expand your horizons and visit Montreal. The beautiful city of Montreal is
overflowing with sights to see, things to do, and places to explore, and while
this may come with a relatively high cost, there is no need to fret. Luckily
for you, if you prefer not to indulge in spending too much money this Winter
season, Montreal’s got all kinds of free activities for you to do. You are sure
to find semblances of beauty and feel the holiday cheer when you take a simple
walk through the streets and take the time to appreciate the pretty lights that
decorate the buildings and houses around you. There are skating rinks and parks
which have free admission too. Here are some of the other things that you’ll
find yourself doing in an inexpensive but meaningful trip to Montreal.
Fête des Neiges
Bring
your friends and your family over to Parc Jean-Drapeau on weekends during the
months of January and February where tourists and locals alike are given a free
pass to enjoy a fun and free event called Fête des Neiges. Some of the shows
include live ice sculpting demonstrations where you’ll see how artists create
wonderful life-like renditions of animals and objects in ice, traditional folk
group performances, quiz shows, musical presentations, and even Disney musical
adventures. For the kids, or the kids-at-heart, you can go zip-lining, tubing,
skating or play foosball. There are food trucks that offer great food at great
prices such as the classic pizza and potato donuts. We suggest that you check
the schedule on their website before going there so that you’ll know when to go
where. The Fête des Neiges is surely an experience that you’ll never forget, so
make sure to bring your family and kids along to this event.
Walk Around
With the
Winter season comes the holiday season, and during holiday season, Montreal
becomes a Christmas wonderland unlike any other. It is truly magical to be in
such a place where the lights and decorations make you feel warm and cozy despite
the freezing temperatures. Some prime locations to visit on your walk are the
Parc La Fountaine with its shimmering skating pond, Lahale Park where there are
musicians, puppeteers and storytellers who make sure you’ll have a good time,
and the department store Maison Ogilvy. Take a walk to downtown Montreal and
visit McGill College Avenue and see trees covered in dozens of sparkling lights
which lead to a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. Everywhere you go and
everywhere you look, the lights will perk you right up and fill your heart with
warmness.
The Mysterious Underground City
For
something a little bit different, go underground and find yourself in a
different world. Montreal is home to the biggest underground city known to man.
To give you an idea of just how large this place is, there are museums, metro
stations, banks, and even a shopping mall. The unique complexes interconnected
by various tunnels provide a place to explore where you’ll get lost with all
the stores that line the area. Don’t forget to grab a map when visiting this
area, and be on the lookout for the Christchurch Cathedral, a sinking church in
the middle of the underground city. Truly a remarkable place, the underground
city will leave you awe struck.
