Going Solo? A Femme Fatale’s Guide To Traveling

So, you are an adventurous solo female traveler? There is nothing wrong with celebrating your independency and knowing that you can manage. However, you need to always be prepared. Being alone can render a person susceptible to many travel dilemmas and challenges. Here are some tips on how you can manage traveling alone as a single, independent woman.

First, a rule of thumb, always tell people who approach you that you are going to meet someone. You can be independent, sure, but it does not mean that you will not get scared. There are many moments when traveling alone that a stranger will approach you. Never let that person know that you are alone. Pretend that someone is on the way to meet you. This is especially difficult, if you are traveling on a foreign land where English is not one of their strengths. Steer clear of these people who keep on insisting that you converse with them, even if it is apparent that you can’t understand a single thing they are saying. Although, it may not be a regular occurrence, it is better to say that you are meeting someone else if a stranger tries to talk to you. It is a given that you would want to make friends when traveling, but as a solo traveler, you need to prioritize your safety.

One other way to ward off predators is to wear a wedding ring. Do not worry if you want to meet new guys, this will not be an issue.

Next, you must be very instinctive. If you feel off or you have the sense that something is wrong, then you better trust that feeling. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Always assess the situation before making any moves.

Understand and familiarize yourself with the culture of your destination. There are some countries in the world where a simple gesture can be mistaken as a motive for something other than friendship. Knowing these simple pieces of information can save you the trouble of attracting someone you are not interested with. If you do not want to be the center of attention, you can mimic the rest of the people and blend well with the crowd. Observe proper decorum and attire if you do not want to stand out from the crowd. The feminist in you may be complaining, but as previously stated, safety comes first.

Prepare yourself. This is one of the most important things on a trip. Always have a plan. Read on the customs, the laws, and other information regarding your destination. Understand the activities you want to try out and read on the history of the places you want to visit. Try to learn the language, if you are going to a non-English speaking country. Assess the money you will be spending and add on a little extra in case of emergency. Pack only your essentials and make sure that you have enough set clothes for your vacation. Not too much, just a few sets will do.
