Naples has it’s own contribution of
royal status and wealth to Italy’s history. The Royal Palace Napoli is the
perfect example, located in central Naples. This palace was built in the 17th
century and was used as one of several palaces by the kings of Naples.
Today, the Royal Palace Napoli has
several uses, remaining a palace for tourists to explore in addition to holding
a museum, a national library, and official tourism offices. This is also the
site of the famous Teatro San Carlo.
The Royal Palace Napoli is an elaborate
palace with long halls, each leading to a different feature of the palace. One
wing may lead you toward the national library with a vast book collection
recounting much of Italy’s history and another hall may lead you to the living
quarters of the palace, showcasing the preserved furnishings from when it was
occupied.
As numerous rulers of Naples used this
palace, inside you will find a special series of statues positioned in
chronological order of all of the rulers who occupied the Royal Palace Napoli.
Pompeii is recognized as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites in the
world.
Pompeii was a city built in the 1st
Century but was subjected to several back-to-back disasters including an
earthquake and the famous Vesuvius eruption that buried the city for countless
centuries. After being rediscovered, Pompeii has been a major tourist
destination for the past 250 years. This ancient city has been preserved
beneath all of it’s degree and today gives a glimpse into the a major city in
the past.
Pompeii should not be mistaken by the
nearby city of Pompei, which was derived from the original. Pompeii is a
citywide tourist site as it was uncovered by archaeologists that showcase not
only architecture but also objects that were used in the past. Within the city
you will discover houses, temples, shops, cafes, amphitheaters, etc.
Until recent, excavations were still
being conducted and many of the sites are still blocked off, but with the scale
of the city, you can walk around for several days to see the entire uncovered
city.
Audio guides are available which are a
great idea to hear the history of each of Pompeii’s landmarks and also many
building reconstruction images can be seen both online and in publications that
display how the city potentially appeared in its prime days.
