Paddington and the Canary Wharf

Also located within central London, Paddington is an area within the City of Westminster, and was integrated with Greater London in 1965.  Historically, Paddington was a part of Middlesex, and it was speculated that they were Saxon settlements near the intersection of Roman-built roads.  There was a time, too, when the area was known for the public executions that were conducted at the Tyburn gallows - at a junction that is now known as Marble Arch.

Locals have since developed the district, and since then it was known for being an elegant, prosperous and respectable district. Today, much work is being done on a project called Paddington Waterside, that is targeted to finish by 2018, and there have been many new developments since the project was begun in 1998.  It is also the location of St. Mary's Hospital, and the Paddington Green Police Station - said to be the most important high-security police station in the UK.  Other notable landmarks here are Hyde Park, Little Venice, Regent's Park, and the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

The neighborhood is a quiet and family-friendly area; there is a diversity of accommodations, many budget friendly, though there are some 4 star hotels. The Paddington Railway station is a very busy place, with thousands of commuters passing through every day.  It is the terminus for the Heathrow Express train to Heathrow, and for trains to the west of England and Wales.

Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf lies to the east of the center of London, and is one of London's main financial districts.  Together with the City of London, it is one of the traditional financial centres in the UK.  If your trip to London includes business as well as pleasure, and maybe a visit to one of the many financial centers in this area, this might be a convenient location for you.

There are also numerous hotel accommodations available on Canary Wharf - though expect these to be a bit pricey. The area - formerly the West India Docks - was completely rebuilt after it was closed in the 1980s.  All its buildings are, therefore, quite new.  It caters mainly to the business and working class, and houses many of Europe's major banks, professional service firms, and media organizations.  Around 105,000 people work here, and the area also provides numerous restaurants, bars, shopping and leisure facilities - most of them high end.

Hotel options are also of the luxury type - featuring large chains of global hotel names. Canary Wharf is located on the West India Docks on the Isle of Dogs, and may be reached by the Jubilee Line of the London Underground, or any of the slower river boat services. Another possible option is a few miles east - and the hotels around the redeveloped dock around the City Airport and the Excel Exhibition Centre.  This is also an expensive area, but comparatively, are slightly cheaper than Canary Wharf.
