What to Do When Traveling To A Country Where No One Speaks English

Many travelers think that as long as they are able to speak in English, they can be able to communicate to people wherever they go. Because of this, what should you do when you travel to a country where you are the only one who speaks English? Well, here are some useful tips:

Today, there are many smartphone apps which can help you translate English to whatever language you wish. Download this app as this will come handy during the trip.
  • Bring a phrase book with you.
Phrase books may be outdated but the information that it contains will forever be useful for you. It is recommended that you bring a phrase book with you since there might be times when your phone will die.
  • Opt for fastfoods.
Ordering in a restaurant can be quite tricky when the locals do not speak English and you do not understand their language. If you wish to make the ordering process as smooth as possible, then it is recommended that you choose to eat at fastfoods that you are familiar with. It can be Mcdonald’s or any other franchises that you have at home.
  • Draw it out.
There are many ways on how you can express what you wish to say and make people understand what you are trying to say. You can just simply use hand gestures. If all else fails, one of the best things that you can do is to draw what you wish to say. This is actually more recommended since there are some gestures which are practical for you but can be offensive in various countries so it is safe to draw it instead.
  • Bring a map with you.
If you wish to go to one place and you have no idea how to get there and the people you tried talking to do not speak English, you next best choice is to look for the location in the map and point it to the person that you are talking to. This is the most effective and efficient way to ask directions when the people do not know how to speak English. Another choice that you have is to bring a picture of the hotel or the address of the hotel and show it to the locals.

When traveling, there are many problems or challenges that you will encounter along the way and language barrier will always be one of them. Maintaining grace under pressure is actually one of the things that traveling teaches you. Do not forget the tips mentioned above and you will surely be able to handle your language problem properly.
